Grand Rapids TSC made history in October 2016, becoming the first American Subbuteo Association club to play a competitive match in Africa.
GRTSC founding member Peter Alegi traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, on a business trip but made sure to pack a 1996 South Africa team in his carry-on suitcase. Warmly welcomed by Cape Town City SC’s Clinton Gahwiler, Peter played a few friendlies against the host and Wayne Mackenzie. Everyone had a great deal of fun and so it was decided to organize a WASPA event a couple of days later.
A 4-man WASPA Friendship Tournament took place on October 7 at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa—site of the upcoming 2016 South African National Championships. Clinton and Peter topped the round robin with 7 points and Peter then won the final.
These “international” matches also marked the first-ever Subbuteo broadcasts from Cape Town, via Facebook Live, which can be viewed on the Grand Rapids TSC page.
Thanks again to Clinton, Wayne, Mike, and Lee for hosting Peter for these thoroughly enjoyable games in Cape Town. It was wonderful to make history together and see how Subbuteo can forge friendships and foster camaraderie all over the world.
